LG has a 97-inch vibrating OLED TV that claims it can offer 5.1 audio sans speakers

Source: LG Display

LG Display is known to experiment with different concepts for its OLED panels. The latest one toys around with the idea of using the display to vibrate sound instead of relying on separate speakers. If the technology seems familiar, Sony has similar technology it calls Acoustic Surface. That tech has been around since 2017. But what separates LG's experiment with its 97-inch OLED EX panel is it claims to offer a 5.1 channel sound system embedded into the widescreen.

Ars Technica pointed out that it's unclear how this will work, given that the sound comes from a central point. But it's not to say it couldn't produce decent sound. LG Display has shared information on whether the technology will arrive in upcoming OLED televisions, but we'll keep an eye out for it.

Samsung won't drop Tizen for Android TV

While Samsung won't be using Tizen for its smartwatches, that won't be the same for its TVs. Samsung denied reports that the company planned to switch to Android TV from Tizen. A Samsung spokesperson told Engadget, "Tizen still is the default platform for our smart TVs going forward." It isn't surprising as the wearables and TV markets are different, and Samsung maintains a dominant position in the latter. And operating systems on televisions aren't top of mind for consumers looking for new TVs.

Samsung's HDR 10+ Adaptive tech optimizes lighting based on your room

While Samsung and Dolby aren't working together to bring Dolby Vision HDR to Samsung televisions, the company has something similar to it. Its HDR10+ technology will support HDR10+Adaptive, which has a Filmmaker Mode that uses the TV's light sensor to adjust lighting based on the room's conditions. HDR10+ expands on basic HDR 10 by encoding information on a per-scene basis.

Xiaomi launches a see-through TV

Chinese tech company Xiaomi might not have a significant presence on this side of the globe, but its new television is too eye-catching not to share. Or rather should we talk about what we can't see? The company unveiled a transparent TV in time for its 10th-anniversary celebration. The Mi TV Lux OLED Transparent Edition looks just like a piece of glass when it's turned off. And when it's turned on, Xiaomi claims the images will look like it's floating in thin air.

Engadget believes the 55-inch transparent OLED panel is based on LG's 55-inch transparent 55EW5TF-A display, which has the same 120Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and 10-bit colour depth. The Mi TV Lux OLED will go on sale in China on August 16 for 49,999 yuan (around CA$9,555). It's unlikely that Xiaomi will sell the TV here, but we couldn't pass up on a chance to talk about unusual tech.
