Uber offers ride discounts on Election Day in Ontario

With Ontario's provincial election happening on June 2, Uber wants to get voters to their polling stations, offering up to 50% off roundtrip rides to and from polls (or up to $5 off each trip. You will need to use the code ONVOTE2022 to avail of the discount. You can use it while the polls are open (between 8:30 AM ET and 9:30 PM ET). 

You will need to apply the promo code in the Wallet section before requesting the ride to make sure you redeem the promotion. It can be used in any Canadian city where Uber is available. Like other promotions, you can't combine them with other offers.

Uber to add fuel surcharge starting Mar. 16

As gas prices continue to spike due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Uber has announced it'll be adding a fuel surcharge to rides and deliveries to assist its drivers and couriers. The drivers and delivery people will get 100% of the surcharge. According to Uber Canada's blog post, "Beginning Wednesday, March 16, rideshare riders will pay a $0.50 surcharge on every ride and, on Uber Eats where trips are shorter, consumer fees will be adjusted to cover the equivalent of a $0.35 surcharge on every delivery."

Uber plans to double the size of its Toronto technical team

Before 2021 is over, Uber plans to double the size of its technical team in Toronto. The ride-hailing and food delivery company plans to hire around 60 people for its engineering, data science, design, and product management teams. There will also be two new divisions coming to Canada—one will focus on core rider experience and the other on memberships.

The former will manage, improve, and develop products and infrastructure needed for the Uber app to work and be more reliable for riders. The latter will focus on growing Uber's members by looking for ways to offer new partnerships, integrations, and exclusive deals. This hiring comes after Uber laid off over 3,000 of its global staff (around 14%) because demand plummeted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
