Review: Apple Watch

Apple Watch offers a distillation of the iPhone’s hallmark features so users can opt to use their iPhones less. The Watch can make or take calls, receive notifications, as well as get mirrored push alerts just like the competitor’s devices, but it can also do so much more.

Apple’s newest product category represents various milestones for the company. It’s the first new product category to come out of Cupertino under Tim Cook as CEO. It is the first major project undertaken by Jony Ive without Steve Jobs, it is the company’s first wearable and it is seen as the necessary replacement to the diminishing iPod product line.

The Apple Beat: Industry focuses on Apple Watch event

Many companies have had a head start in the wearables race and so far, there hasn't been a clear winner. 

We're a few days away from Apple's 'Spring Forward' Event which will likely be heavily focused on the company's next product category and first wearable, the Apple Watch. Everyone will be watching with great interest.

Wearables, specially smart watches, have been around for years. Various companies have given us their versions of what a proper smart watch should be, what it has to offer, and a lot of functionality offloaded from our smartphones to our wrist.

Tim Cook: Apple Watch coming in April

Apple's anticipated entry into the wearable devices space will happen in April. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the date during today's Apple Earnings call where the company announced its most profitable quarter in history due to successful sales of its iPhone and Mac products. The Apple Watch, which is expected to start at a price of US $349.99, is the latest product category to come from Apple since the iPad was launched in 2010. 

"We are incredibly excited about Apple Watch and other great products and services in the pipeline for 2015," Cook added.

Apple opens Apple Watch app development starting today

Apple just opened up the WatchKit development platform to allow developers to get on board with creating apps for Apple Watch starting today. Apple Watch is expected to come in Spring of 2015 but Apple wants a robust app ecosystem for the wearable from day one.

The iOS 8.2 SDK beta including WatchKit is available immediately for iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com/watchkit. The WatchKit site includes programming guides, human interface guidelines, templates and more. Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch.
