IFA 2012: Sony's Xperia Tablet S shoots for 10-inch Android tablet supremacy

IFA, Berlin ( Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) - The third time could be the charm for Sony as they introduce their latest Android tablet but first under the Xperia brand.

The Xperia Tablet S is locked and loaded and set to compete in the 10-inch Android tablet market that's been sort of lacklustre of late.

Powered by a NVIDIA TegraTM 3 quad-core processor the Xperia Tablet S builds on the remote control functionality of its predecessor. The screen maintains a crisp display and fingerprint and glare reducing coatings.

The device includes an SD card slot for expanded storage and HDMI connectivity with optional HDMI adapter cable. With built-in Wi-Fi compatibility, users can browse the internet, check e-mail and access digital content anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection. It also runs on Android 4.0.

It is interesting to not that Sony has expanded the accessories of the said tablet. Including a keyboard cover that is similar to what we've seen for Microsoft's Surface.

“Tablets are no longer just a personal device, but are being shared by family members, and we heard from consumers that they wanted to have parental controls. It was important for us to provide parents with a solution for controlling what content their children could access from the tablet,” a Sony spokesperson added.

The Xperia S tablet is also splashproof and has a special coating that that repels water.

The Xperia Tablet S is available in 16 GB and 32 GB versions and will be sold at Sony Stores, including online, and other authorized dealers nationwide for about $399 and $499 respectively starting September 7 (preorders start today).
