Doodle 4 Google Competition for Kids

By Sonya Davidson

We all love seeing the different designs around the Google logo. Often the logos are dressed up to highlight a special date or to pay tribute to someone special. They're fun and sometimes surprising.

For the first time, Google Canada is organizing a national Doodle 4 Google contest for kids. This year's theme is "If "I could invent anything , I would invent..."  Students from kindergarten to grade 12 are invited to submit their logo designs for the Google.ca homepage. The winning doodler will received a $10,000 scholarship a Google Chromebook and a $10,000 grant to their current school along with a trip to Toronto to view a speical exhibition of the top doodle entries at the Royal Ontario Museum in 2014. The winning doodle will also be featured on the homepage for 24 hours. Hit jump for more information and submission requirements.

Submission deadline is December 31, 2013. Entries are accepted at www.google.ca

The judging panel includes Chris Hadfield,  Janet Carding (Director and CEO of the ROM) and Ann Makosinki (Google Science Fair Winner 2013).

Google Canada will be announcing the winners in Toronto at the ROM in February.

FUN FACTS ABOUT GOOGLE DOODLES:

  • In 1998, before the company was even incorporated, the concept of the doodle was born when Google founders Larry and Sergey placed a stick figure drawing beind the second "o" in the word Google. This was intended as a fun way to let Google users know that the founders were "out of office."

  • In 2000, the founders asked then webmaster Dennis Hwang to produce a doodle for Bastille Day. It was so well received that Hwang was appointed Google's chief doodler.

  • The Google doodle team has created over 1500 doodles for their homepages around the world.

  • Yes, they actually get together and brainstorm which events will be celebrated with a doodle!

  • You can visit www.google.com/doodles to see the past doodles that have run around the world including the interactive doodles created like Les Paul guitar and PAC-MAN.
