Preview: Totally Redesigned 2016 Mazda MX-5

It would be a challenge to find a roadster as iconic as the Mazda MX-5. This two-seated, rear-wheeled ragtop has decades of heritage, a closet full of awards, and a true cult following. Last week, Mazda introduced us to our first look at the 2016 Mazda MX-5. It is the most dramatic evolution on the original 1989 design by the company to-date.  From the photos we’ve been shown, it perfectly blends that heritage with an aggressive modern aesthetic. . . one that may just drop the “chick car” reputation once and for all.

I can’t wait to get behind the wheel, but before I do, I want to do a full review on the previous generation 2015 model, so that I can properly compare the two. I feel that to properly judge the incumbent, here, it’s important to get a feel for the lineage. Mazda has graciously agreed to let me get behind the wheel of one in a few weeks. With any luck, I’ll be able to follow that up next year with my full thoughts and impressions on the stunning new model when it arrives on Canadian shores.
