National Girls Learning Code Day takes place May 13
Ladies Learning Code -- a national not-for-profit offering beginner-friendly tech education -- is proud to announce the fourth-annual National Girls Learning Code Day on May 13, when over 650 girls, ages 8-13, and their parent or guardian will attend workshops in over 29 communities across Canada. This year’s event is presented with the support of Scotiabank.
On that day, hundreds of Canadian girls and their parents will come together to challenge themselves to learn a new skill: animation. Together with their parents, girls will:
● Discover a passion for learning about technology
● Experience the satisfaction that comes from being a builder of technology
● Build and develop a fun, interactive animation to share with their friends and family ● Build confidence and develop a willingness to try new things
Since 2011, Ladies Learning Code has been a pioneer in the national effort to increase digital literacy among Canadian women and youth. While the organization began as a small grassroots initiative, it has expanded nation-wide and boasts a full suite of internationally-recognized digital literacy programs, including Teachers Learning Code (for educators), and a cross-country initiative, Canada Learning Code Week, which will be included in Canada 150 Celebrations. Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is getting in on the action!
Ladies Learning Code’s remarkable success is due in large part to the generous support of industry partners, including Scotiabank. For several years, Scotiabank has lent its support to Ladies Learning Code’s youth programming, and we are pleased to have them on board as this year’s National Presenting Partner for Girls Learning Code Day.
“At Scotiabank, we believe in supporting organizations that help young people reach their infinite potential. This is why we’re excited to be working with our partners at Ladies Learning Code to bring girls across Canada together to discover what they can create with technology” said Dubie Cunningham, Vice President of Innovation at Scotiabank’s Digital Factory. “These young women are our future leaders and we hope the girls are inspired by National Girls Learning Code Day to learn more about future careers in the incredibly interesting digital space.”
Toronto-based media are invited to attend the Girls Learning Code Day workshop taking place at Scotiabank’s Digital Factory 333 King Street East from 1PM to 4PM on May 13. Melissa Sariffodeen will be in attendance and available for questions and photos.
