AirPlay 2 now available, ask Siri to play music on your Sonos smart speakers
Sonos has taken pains to ensure that it's smart speaker line up can work with various partners. The Sonos One and Sonos Beam already work with Amazon Alexa out of the box.
Now that Apple's AirPlay 2 standard has been made available, users of iPhones and iPads can also use their Sonos speakers.
I've tested AirPlay 2 on some Sonos speakers by setting up the Sonos app on my iPhone. Suddenly I see some of my recent Sonos speakers appearing as AirPlay 2 compatible. This allows me to quickly route audio from my iPad or iPhone to any of these nearby smart speakers.
I find this useful when listening to news or podcasts and wanting better sound than the speaker on my devices. AirPlay 2 connects quickly and with no latency, the sound on Sonos speakers is phenomenal.
Siri on Tap
I can now use Siri to control Apple Music and can harness the smart assistant with various voice controls. "Hey Siri, play some smooth jazz in the kitchen," or "Hey Siri, play Beats 1 Radio in the office." When a song comes on that I want to know more about, I can even access Alexa right from the connected Sonos One or Sonos Beam smart speaker to ask what song is playing or who the artist is. I'll continue to use and try AirPlay 2 on Sonos to add greater versatility to my family's music experience. AirPlay 2 on Sonos is rolling out soon via an app update.
