Apple is reportedly working on a new AirPower prototype with A11 processor

The original, never-released Apple AirPower

Apple is reportedly giving AirPower another try. A new AirPower device codenamed C68 is supposedly in the hands of engineers. The company worked out the issue with overheating by adding an A11 processor.

According to Jon Prosser, Apple is sending the prototypes to the homes of engineers working in its Sharing and Proximity networking team to develop software communication between this device and others. It comes attached with a blurry photo, so it's advisable to take the rumour with a grain of salt.

Prosser detailed how Apple has been able to use the processor to prevent overheating. He tweeted, "Because the Apple Watch uses a tweaked proprietary charging method it requires more energy to charge. In previous prototypes, if you placed an Apple Watch on the mat alongside other devices, the entire mat would overheat, and in most cases, combust. (Not joking.)"

"Using the A11," he continues, "this new prototype has the ability to route power to specific coil regions and can dynamically wait for temperatures to drop before applying more power - preventing it from overheating."

This isn't the first rumour that says Apple hasn't completely given up on the idea of releasing a wireless charging mat. But we hope there is some truth to this one.
