Apple is reportedly working on a new AirPower prototype with A11 processor

The original, never-released Apple AirPower

Apple is reportedly giving AirPower another try. A new AirPower device codenamed C68 is supposedly in the hands of engineers. The company worked out the issue with overheating by adding an A11 processor.

According to Jon Prosser, Apple is sending the prototypes to the homes of engineers working in its Sharing and Proximity networking team to develop software communication between this device and others. It comes attached with a blurry photo, so it's advisable to take the rumour with a grain of salt.

Apple cancels AirPower

After the really long wait for it to arrive, we’re no longer getting Apple’s taking on the wireless charging mat. The company announced it was cancelling the AirPower because of the difficulty in achieving the company’s “high standards” for the product. It was announced back in September 2017 when the iPhone X was launched. It was initially pegged to get a 2018 release but then the company went silent for 18 months without announcing or shipping the device.

The device was supposed to charge up to three devices at once—namely the Apple Watch, AirPod headphones, and iPhone. It was supposed to make use of multiple coil technology to allow you to charge your device anywhere on the mat. A software overlay was supposed to use the iPhone to show the current charge of all three devices. Overheating issues and engineering challenges were being rumoured before.

Apple AirPower rumoured to get Spring 2019 release

Aside from hearing more about the AirPods, a new report claims that the now mythical AirPower charging mat is finally arriving sometime in the Spring. It'll supposedly launch alongside the AirPod 2's wireless charging case, which will reportedly carry less charge than the non-wireless one. The charging mat is expected to be a bit thicker than what's initially expected, and this is probably due to the coils used for charging. The AirPower will reportedly get additional features that will debut when iOS 13 comes.
