Google opens custom Tiles for Wear OS to third-party developers

Source: Google

After limiting Wear OS's Tiles to Google or other smartwatch manufacturers on the platform, Google is finally opening this feature to third-party developers. Tiles are widgets that give wearers of Wear OS-powered smartwatches at-a-glance information on things like calendar notifications, weather, and stats.

Google describes Tiles as providing "easy access to the information and actions users need in order to get things done. With a simple swipe from the watch face, a user can find out the latest forecast or start a timer."

This new addition may or may not revitalize interest in Wear OS. Only time will tell. Google plans to roll these custom Tiles to users later this spring when they "roll out the corresponding Wear OS platform update."
