Apple redesigns iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini's camera array

Apple officially launched the new iPhone 13 series earlier today with a slightly different look than its predecessor. The standard iPhone 13 model comes in two options: the 6.1-inch regular model and the smaller iPhone 13 mini with a 5.4-inch display. Both get smaller notches than their predecessor, and the cameras are arranged diagonally.

Apple increased the storage options for these models, starting at 128GB up to 512GB. Both are powered by the new A15 Bionic chip, which it claims is the "fastest CPU in a smartphone."

In typical Apple fashion, the company won't give out the battery capacity. But it claims the iPhone 13 mini has 1.5 hours more battery life than its predecessor, while the iPhone 13 gets 2.5 hours more than the iPhone 12.

The company brings the camera tech from the last generation's iPhone 12 Pro Max to these base iPhone 13 models. The iPhone 13 gets a 47% larger sensor for the primary camera to let you capture better in low light with less noise. It also gets last year's sensor-shift stabilization tech that physically moves the wide sensor to eliminate vibrations.

The wide sensor gets a 12-megapixel lens with an f/1.6 aperture, while the 12-megapixel ultrawide camera has a faster f/2.4 lens and a 120-degree field of view.

Apple is also introducing photographic profiles and a new cinematic mode for videos to the iPhone 13 series. Photographic profiles allow you to create a consistent look across your shots. Meanwhile, Cinematic Mode brings a rack focus effect to the iPhone. It will automatically shift focus while filming when it sees people enter the frame or the subject glances away from the camera. You also get the option to change or lock focus on a specific object manually. This mode is coming to the front-facing camera, too.

Pricing starts at $949 for the iPhone 13 mini and $1,099 for the iPhone 13. And you can get the new models in Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED.
