Fitbit debuts new health- and fitness-focused Sense 2, Versa 4 smartwatches
It feels like it's been a while since we've heard from Fitbit, but now the Google-owned company is back with a few new devices and accessories. Two of these are refreshes to its Versa and Sense line. While the Fitbit Versa 4 focuses on fitness, the Sense 2 takes a deeper dive into your overall wellness.
These aren't running on Wear OS yet, but the Fitbit OS versions on them do have touches of Google infused in them. They have Google Assistant support and will get Google Wallet is coming "soon." These watches get a version of Wear OS Tiles, which lets you add customizable widgets to the side of the clock face. But these are limited to first-party apps, so that's mostly fitness information. The app drawer also looks a bit more like what's on Wear OS 3. Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation support is coming, but there's no date yet for its arrival.
Fitbit has improved the design of both smartwatches. These are now lighter with thinner bodies. These also get physical buttons instead of the faux ones on the predecessors. But the buttons are moved to a new spot, so it'll be easier to avoid pressing them when you're working out.
The Fitbit Sense 2 takes your overall health and wellbeing into consideration. It gets a new Body Response sensor that can track your stress levels throughout the day by monitoring electrodermal activity. It will take your heart rate, heart rate variability, and skin temperature to understand body stress. For Fitbit premium members, you get access to a Stress Management Score that can help you manage your stress by letting you know when you should take a breathe and settle down a bit. This improved sensor technology also improves the Sense 2's health metrics and arterial fibrillation (AFib) detection. Fitbit introduces a new photoplethysmography algorithm that can detect signs of AFib when you're sleeping or resting.
Premium subscribers can also health metric trends over the past 90 days to examine your overall wellbeing. This smartwatch gets a 6+ day battery life, but if you need a quick charge, it can fast charge in 12 minutes for a day's use.
Meanwhile, Fitbit markets the Versa 4 as its "fitness-focused smartwatch and the perfect sidekick to help you reach your personal activity goal." It can track more exercises (40 this time) and provide real-time stats like target heart rate intensity levels. You can track these right from the watch. It also gets a built-in GPS and smartwatch features including call, text, and app notifications. The Versa 4 also gets the same 6+ day battery life.
The Fitbit Sense 2 retails for $399.95, while the Fitbit Versa 4 goes for $299.95. The Sense 2 comes in Shadow Grey/Graphite Aluminum, Lunar White/Platinum Aluminum, and Blue Mist and Soft Gold Aluminum. The Versa 4 is available in Black/Graphite Aluminum, Waterfall Blue/ Platinum Aluminum, Pink Sand/Copper Rose Aluminum, and Beet Juice/Copper Rose Aluminum. Both are available for pre-order and includes six months of Fitbit Premium for free. There's also a new Fitbit Inspire 3, if you want to check that out.
