Samsung announces Galaxy AI, a live translation feature for its next phone

Samsung

Google's "Live Translate" feature, which can translate phone calls in real-time, is still only available on Pixel devices. But Samsung fans may soon enjoy a similar feature on their phones—without downloading third-party apps. Samsung announced that its next phone—likely the "Galaxy S24" series—will have "Galaxy AI," a combination of on-device artificial intelligence developed by Samsung and cloud-based AI from other providers.

One of the features of Galaxy AI is the "AI Live Translate Call," which can display translations as a chat log during phone calls. The feature was demonstrated in a screenshot of a conversation between an English speaker in New York and a Korean speaker in Seoul. The feature also has an "add event" button that pops up when a time and date are mentioned, making it easy to schedule appointments with foreign contacts.

Galaxy AI is not just about translation, though. Samsung's EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business, Wonjoon Choi, said "it will change how we think about our phones forever." He did not reveal if Galaxy AI will also include Samsung's Gauss generative AI technology, but based on his statement and Google's recent products, we should expect a lot more from next year's lineup.
