Netflix Canada is ditching its cheapest ad-free plan
Netflix Canada quietly got rid of its CAD 9.99 "basic" plan, which let you watch ad-free on one screen at a time. This was the lowest-priced option for Netflix subscribers in the country.
Now, new Netflix subscribers will have to choose between two options:
- Pay CAD 5.99 per month for the "ad tier" plan, which lets you watch on two screens simultaneously but with commercials.
- Pay CAD 16.49 per month or more for the "ad-free" plans, which offer higher video quality and more screens to watch on.
The company also recently tested a password-sharing crackdown in Canada, which could limit the number of people who can access one account. Password sharing is only available on the "premium" plan and costs an extra CAD 7.99 per user.
If you're already on the CAD 9.99 basic plan, you can keep it for now. But Netflix says it will remove this option for existing members "in the near future." So you might want to start thinking about whether you're willing to pay more or use one less streaming service.
