Bluesky finally gets direct messaging
Calling all Bluesky users! The platform just launched direct messaging (DMs), letting you chat privately with friends and contacts. It's text-based for now, but get ready to share images and videos soon.
How to send DMs:
- Mobile users: Tap the chat icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Desktop users: Click the chat bubble in your sidebar.
- In the new chat window, search for the username you want to message.
- Craft your message and hit send!
But there are a few things you need to know about it:
- End-to-end encryption for DMs is coming soon, but it's not available yet.
- By default, anyone you follow can send you a DM. You can adjust this privacy setting in "Settings" to control who can message you directly (Everyone, No One, or Followers Only).
- For added control, you can enable or disable message notification sounds and even report or block users directly within your DMs. Remember, blocked users can't message you, but muted users still can.
Bluesky prioritizes user safety. So, the platform notes that its moderation team might need limited access to DMs in specific cases, such as investigating spam or coordinated harassment. However, Bluesky assures users that this access is strictly monitored and only used for these purposes.
