Google Meet gets a Material You makeover

Photo: Google

Many Google apps have received the sleek and customizable Material You treatment, but Google Meet remained an outlier. Finally, a refresh is on the horizon! The Google Workspace blog announced a series of upcoming improvements to Meet's user interface (UI), starting with the in-call controls.

Expect visual enhancements like a colour refresh and "dynamic shapes" that visually indicate call status (muted, active speaker, etc.). While seemingly minor, this update promises a cleaner and more intuitive experience.

The update extends beyond the app itself. You'll see the new UI in Google Meet on the web, in picture-in-picture mode, and even when using Meet within other Google products like Docs and Slides.

This is just the first wave of changes coming to Meet in 2024, with more features planned throughout the year (though specific dates haven't been announced). Personal accounts will see the update starting today, while Workspace users will have to wait until July 2. As always, the rollout might take some time. Be patient, and the update will eventually reach you.
