ASUS ROG Project Dali: A glimpse into the colourful future of laptops

Forget the usual RGB lighting. The ASUS ROG Project Dali, unveiled at Computex 2024, boasts a revolutionary full-colour e-ink display on the lid. This innovation blows traditional customization out of the water, allowing you to personalize your laptop like never before.

While the current iteration, showcased at ASUS' booth and noted by Yanko Design, leans more towards aesthetics than functionality, it holds immense potential. The 12-inch, 1600x1200 Spectra 6 panel, typically found in high-end e-readers and specialized displays, offers incredible image versatility.

However, unlike Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus Gen 2 with its secondary screen, the image changes on the Project Dali take 10-12 seconds. The upside? Once set, the image requires zero power.

Considering similar colour e-ink displays cost around US$700 (around CA$962) on their own, a retail Project Dali seems unlikely at present. It's a concept, after all, with a clear bezel around the lid panel (presumably a ROG Zephyrus G14 or similar underneath).

But with e-ink's growing popularity in advertising (think dynamic price tags in stores), a future featuring affordable, integrated e-ink displays isn't out of the realm of possibility. Imagine setting both a flamboyant "at-home" wallpaper and a more subdued one for meetings! The Project Dali hints at a world of personalized laptop experiences.
