Meta and EssilorLuxottica have announced that two million pairs of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have been sold since their October 2023 launch. This figure, revealed by EssilorLuxottica CEO Francesco Milleri, excludes sales of the original Ray-Ban Stories released in 2021.
The companies are now aiming for a dramatic increase in production. EssilorLuxottica plans to expand production capacity to 10 million Ray-Ban Meta units annually by the end of 2026. Milleri emphasized a long-term partnership with Meta, envisioning the smart glasses as a "shared platform" open to third-party brands, hinting at future collaborations like the rumoured Oakley-branded glasses. He also suggested that all Meta glasses will be AI-powered, with potential subscription services on the horizon, and expressed excitement about the global expansion of Meta's multimodal AI features.
Looking ahead, Meta is reportedly developing glasses with a display for release in late 2025, potentially alongside a neural wristband for control. While the current sales figures represent a significant milestone, achieving the vision of smart glasses as a primary digital platform will require substantial growth, as current sales pale in comparison to smartphone sales. Meta's continued investment, including recent Super Bowl ads and a new VP of retail for wearables, signals a strong commitment to this market.
