Apple launches Invites event planning app

Apple has unveiled an app called Invites designed to streamline event planning within its ecosystem. The app allows Apple device owners to create custom event invitations, share links, and integrate shared photo albums and Apple Music playlists. Weather and Maps widgets are also included for planning and navigation.

While an iCloud+ subscription is required to create invites, anyone, including Android users, can RSVP and access event details, albeit with a few extra steps. This move positions Apple to compete with platforms like Canva and newer event-planning apps like Partiful.

Partiful, which was even recognized by Apple as a 2024 Cultural Impact Finalist, offers similar event planning features and boasts millions of users. However, Apple's integration of Invites with existing services like Apple Maps, Music, Messages, and Mail gives it a competitive edge within the Apple ecosystem. While Partiful has Android support and a loyal user base, Apple's entry into the market could sway some potential users.

The launch of Apple Invites is the latest example of Apple "Sherlocking," a term referring to the company incorporating features of existing third-party apps into its offerings. While some argue this is simply the natural evolution of Apple's software, it has raised concerns among developers of competing apps. Despite past instances of Sherlocking, like password managers and journaling apps, many affected apps have continued to thrive. Whether Apple Invites will significantly impact Partiful and other event-planning apps remains to be seen.
