Just a month after previewing their new BlackBerry 10 OS slated to come late 2012, there has been a spate of recent executive departures and now news that restructuring of the company will result in inevitable layoffs.

BlackBerry handsets approved for US Department of Defense deployment

With a reputation for ironclad security earned though years of serving governments and the enterprise, Research In Motion got a bit of a boost when the US Department of Defense chose its BlackBerry smartphones as standard issue for the DoD.

RIM announced yesterday the DoD-wide approval for the use of BlackBerry 7 smartphones. Working with U.S. Army and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) sponsors and partners, BlackBerry 7 smartphones have undergone successful testing through Army labs leading to a subsequent listing on DISA's Unified Communications Approved Product List (UCAPL).

RIM appoints new COO and Chief Marketing Officer

Research In Motion just announced the appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer and Chief Marketing Officer, a sure sign that things are moving at the Waterloo, ON BlackBerry maker just a week after its BlackBerry World Developer conference. Kristian Tear  was announced as Chief Operating Officer and Frank Boulben is the Chief Marketing Officer. See the full release below.

SlideShow: BlackBerry World 2012 Day Two

It was a big day for Research In Motion and for their new CEO Thorsten Heins as he unveiled BlackBerry 10, their future mobile operating system. Highlights of the day included a sneak peek at the Developer Alpha Hardware, some insight into new keyboard and camera technology as well as a QNX-ready Porsche.

The day ended on a high note as RIM threw a party in Universal Studios Orlando featuring the Martinez Brothers (of the we need tools, not toys fame). It was a great way to celebrate the good news that RIM is back in the race and a nice break before everyone goes back to work to make BlackBerry 10 a contender later this year.
