Power Trio: The Huawei P20 Pro Review

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Today's smartphones are as much about photography than they are about being connected, running apps and serving as the conduits to our digital lives.

Each year smartphone makers add more cameras, more DSLR-like features, improved filters, and even myriad ways to create emojis or replicate studio lighting.

Over the course of smartphone history, however, there have been standout camera phones that have leapfrogged the market and offered outstanding camera and picture quality.

Super camera phones of the past include the Nokia Lumia 1020 with an outstanding 41-megapixel sensor as well as the Nokia PureView which was even more audacious, albeit much rarer to find. The Huawei P20 Pro is the heir apparent to this throne and this is by design.

Apple announces iOS 12 with a focus on managing screen time

Apple revealed all the software updates and zero hardware today at their World Wide Developer’s Conference WWDC.

While the company played up expected new features to excite and delight users like new mEmoji, AR functionality as well as even better camera and photos functionality, the key reveals were about managing screen time.

Following in the stead of Google who announced features last month to help track and manage smartphone use and screen time, iOS 12 will  similarly generate activity reports for time spent on apps, websites or social media. Ideal for parents managing their young ones’ iPad or gaming time, these metrics also serve to give a realistic picture of our online and smartphone addictions.

Also improved are the Do Not Disturb function on iOS devices that help people stay in the moment and focus on work and class as well as family time like dinner or a date. Notifications, which have become the bane of almost all smartphone users, can now be managed on a granular level and will be tied to time as well as to location constraints.

iOS 12 comes this fall but will be available as a public beta for intrepid users. Developers can get their hands on the latest build starting today.

Apple delaying HomePod release until 2018

Apple is postponing the release of its HomePod smart speaker until 2018. The company, which showcased the HomePod along with the iMac Pro during this year's WWDC (World Wide Developer's Conference) is the company's answer to Amazon's Echo and Google Home, speakers that integrate smart assistant technology.

“We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's ready for our customers,” an Apple spokesperson said. “We'll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.

Marvel teases Avengers: Infinity War as the culmination of the MCU

The MCU, or Marvel Cinematic Universe, kicked off when the first Iron Man hit screens in 2008 and is going to hit its peak during Avengers: Infinity War. Coming in 2018, the film will not only team-up various heroes, it will team-up The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy plus other characters like Dr. Strange and Spide-Man. The Russo Brothers helmed epic is expected to be a blockbuster but some are worried that having over a dozen heroes and scores of villains might be too much to handle. Captain America: Civil War was a thrill ride but it already felt busy, this is an Avengers movie, and one that's going to be on an even larger scale (hopefully better than the mediocre Age of Ultron).
