We welcome Android Marshmallow!

So, we finally put a name to Android M and this time Google names the latest iteration of its mobile OS as Marshmallow? Why Marshmallow? Don’t they usually use dessert names? Actually, according to Android developers they name Android OS after tasty treats and not just desserts. When you say tasty treats, it means those sinful eats you munch on after a tired, stressful day at work. According to one of the engineers, after long stressful runs when they started out as a small team, when they got tired they just wanted to eat bad food. And that’s probably where they got the idea for the naming convention of their mobile platform. You can check out more about that in the video above from YouTubers Nat and Lo. The statue for Android Marshmallow has also been unveiled. And you can check that out here.

Rumours claim refreshed Nexus 5 will be launched with Android M

The Nexus 5 is making a comeback, at least that’s what’s been going around the rumour mill. A refreshed version of the Nexus 5 will reportedly be launched alongside Android M release. It is said to be made by LG and would probably look similar to the original Nexus 5. But it’ll pack in some pretty powerful specs like a Quad HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of internal storage. It will also supposedly support USB-C charging, which is going to be supported by Android M, and have a better rear-facing camera. At the moment, these are all just rumours, so you should be a bit wary about its appearance. It seems more likely that a new “regular-sized” Nexus will make a comeback but we will believe it when we see it.

Google I/O: Now on Tap boosts contextual search capabilities

Screenshot: Cult of Android

Google Now just got smarter with the new Now on Tap feature. It basically lets you fire off quick queries while within other apps. For example, you’re listening to a certain musician in a music app and want to know what his/her real name is. Now on Tap will be able to answer that for you. Google’s Aparna Chennapragada said this feature can even turn text message conversations she has with her husband into actionable information. For example, being able to set a reminder to pick up dry cleaning or get a restaurant recommendation when she was talking to her husband about a dinner date.

Other sample features include Now on Tap being able to help you decipher unpronounceable items on a menu, even showing you a photo while it’s at it. This feature will be available when Android M launches later this year.

Google I/O: Android M will feature fingerprint enabled mobile payments platform

Google is hoping to catch app to rival mobile payments solution Apple Pay. Coming with the next version of the Android OS (Android M), the Android Pay system will leverage NFC to enable secure payments in over 700,000 locations in the US. Android Pay will also enable in app purchases as well as web purchases that support the service.
