iPhone 16 base models reportedly struggle in early sales

Apple iPhone 16 and 16 Plus might not be as popular as its iPhone 16 Pro counterparts. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares his initial reports on shipment updates for the new iPhones. He sees demand for the base iPhone 16 models as "lacklustre," while the iPhone 16 Pro models see orders comparable to the iPhone 15 Pro.

It doesn't seem to affect production much, though. Kuo says assembly orders for all four phones remain mostly the same. There's only a "negligible" 3-5% reduction of component orders for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Production estimate for the iPhone 16 devices in the fourth quarter of 2024 is around 88-89 million units (slightly lower than last year's 90-91 million units).

What's new with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max

The Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max get a bunch of new features as well. They get bigger displays with thinner bezels, upgraded camera features, and the new Camera Control button, to name a few.

One of the most notable additions is the new Camera Control feature. This physical button depresses slightly into the case while offering additional haptic feedback. It doesn't just work as a shutter button. It also has a capacitive touch surface you can swipe on to navigate through different camera settings. Later this year, Apple will roll out a software update that will give this button a two-stage shutter option for locking focus and exposure.

iPhone 16 lineup poised for battery boost

Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 series is set to deliver longer battery life, thanks to a significant battery upgrade. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is increasing battery energy density while ensuring safety by enclosing the cells in a stainless steel casing. The increased battery density—expected to be around 5-10%—will primarily benefit the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

This design change not only enhances battery life but also simplifies replacement, aligning with the EU's upcoming repair regulations. With the EU's mandate for user-replaceable smartphone batteries looming in 2025, the industry is undergoing a transformation. Apple's rumoured move to a stainless steel battery case is a proactive step towards meeting these regulations while enhancing user experience.
