Face ID doesn’t seem to work for approving family purchases on the iPhone X

Review: Apple iPhone X

If you thought it would be easier to approve family purchases on the iPhone X, you have another thing coming. As seen on Apple’s forums, people can’t seem to figure out how to use Face ID to approve family purchases. Users would need to manually enter password for it to work. In case you aren’t familiar, Apple has an Ask to Buy feature to help parents control what their children buy on their iOS devices. Before Touch ID worked but it seems to no longer be the case with iPhone X. Face ID works to authenticate a user when they make a purchase, but it doesn’t seem to work for this instance. Perhaps it’s a fail-safe to prevent kids who can dupe the phone’s facial recognition software and have them go to town with app-related purchases.

Wikipedia updates iOS app to bring ‘Black’ mode to the iPhone X

Here’s one more developer taking advantage of the iPhone X’s immersive display. Wikipedia just updated its app for iOS to introduce a new Black mode that works great for an OLED screen like that on this device. On top of this, version 5.7.3 of Wikipedia also introduces faster article loading and less data use and will have images downloaded only when they’re about to be displayed or saved. The appearance option to have info boxes will also be open by default. Aside from these, Wikipedia also did some spring cleaning within the app.

Google Hangouts gets optimized for iPhone X

Joining the rest of the Google apps on the iOS platform, Google Hangouts just got an update to optimize it for iPhone X. This means Google’s dedicated messaging app will take advantage of the iPhone X’s immersive display and gets rid of the black bars at the top and the bottom. Aside from this, Google didn’t introduce anything new to the app. But if you have the iPhone X and use this messaging app, it might be time to update your app.

Spotify now supports iPhone X

The iPhone X screen with and without the letterboxing

Might be a bit late when compared to other popular apps but better late than never we say. The iOS version of Spotify now supports the iPhone X’s 5.8-inch OLED display. This means you get to see more of things like track lists and search results on the screen as well as more artwork when you browse through albums and playlists. The 1,125 x 2,436 resolution display of the iPhone X allows for 20 percent more vertical space for content. Heavy users of the music streaming app might appreciate the update.
