iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 leave behind older iPhones and iPad

Photo: Apple

Apple has discontinued support for iPhones X, 8, and 8 Plus in iOS 17, ending the hopes of many users who wanted to keep their 2017 models updated for another year. While iOS 16 dropped all devices older than the iPhone 7 and the first-gen iPhone SE, this is the latest crop of older iPhone devices to get the boot. Similarly, iPadOS 17 will no longer support the first-gen iPad Pro and fifth-gen iPad from its support list.

Leak shows smaller chin for the Galaxy S10+

Samsung Galaxy S10+ chin compared to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and iPhone X

The latest leak for the Galaxy S10+ is going into the minutiae of details. This time around, it’s focusing on the chin of the upcoming Samsung flagship. A new leak shows how the Galaxy S10+’s chin will compare to the iPhone X’s and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s. The difference isn’t that significant, but you can see a slight difference—or at least you’d need to take a ruler to it. If you’ve been looking for a bigger display, looks like the upcoming Samsung might deliver.

Apple launches free replacement program for faulty displays of some iPhone X units

For iPhone X users who seem to be experiencing touch issues, you might be able to get your phone repaired for free. There seems to be a failed component in the display module that makes parts of the display not respond. Apple or an authorized dealer will replace the module for free. Now, if there are other issues (like a cracked screen) that’s preventing them from repairing the module, you will be charged for these repairs. Now, if you already paid for a display module replacement, you might be able to get a refund for this.

Apple closes chapter on headphone jacks, kills off 4 models from its site

We say goodbye to the iPhone SE and this classic Apple designIt’s typical for Apple, or any other tech company, to discontinue old models as they introduce new devices. This time around the company kills off four devices from its lineup: the iPhone X, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, and the iPhone SE. These four phones are no longer available on Apple’s site. It seems surprising that Apple killed off the iPhone X less than a year since it was introduced, but it also seems logical with the new iPhone Xs carrying the same base model price but with better specs. Perhaps Apple didn’t want to make the iPhone X redundant.

As for the other three devices, having them taken out of Apple’s lineup means we’ve seen the last of headphone jacks on iPhones. The 6S models and the SE were the last iPhones to carry the audio port. The SE is also the last device to carry the style of the iPhone 5 and it was popular with consumers who wanted a relatively inexpensive and smaller iPhone. Right now the smallest and least expensive iPhone option is the iPhone 7 but this has a 4.7-inmch screen compared to the 4-inch one on the SE and is US$100 pricier than the SE at US$450.
