New Apple Mac Pro has a glitch with internal SATA drives

Apple has acknowledged a bug that causes some internal SATA hard drives to disconnect from the 2023 Mac Pro after the computer wakes from sleep. The company will release a "future macOS update" to fix the issue.

The Mac Pro, which recently launched with Apple's M2 Ultra chip, comes with SSD storage but also has SATA ports for connecting additional hard drives. However, due to a glitch, some of these drives may disconnect when the Mac Pro resumes from sleep mode.

Apple explained in a support document that if your Mac automatically goes to sleep or if you manually put your Mac to sleep, then certain models of internal SATA drives might unexpectedly disconnect from your computer. "If you see a message that your disk was not ejected properly, you can restart your Mac to reconnect to the drive," they advised.

Until Apple releases a software update to address the problem, you can prevent your Mac Pro from automatically going to sleep by changing a setting in the System Preferences app. You need to click on Displays → Advanced…, and enable the option Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.

The new Mac Pro has the same design as the Intel-based model from 2019 but does not support graphics cards or user-upgradeable RAM due to Apple silicon's unified architecture. If you do not need PCIe expansion, you should consider the Mac Studio instead.

Apple 15" MacBook Air, Apple Silicon Mac Pro reportedly in the works

Aside from the iMac, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in his weekly newsletter that Apple is getting ready to release the long-rumoured 15-inch version of the MacBook Air. The company is also supposedly working on a refresh for the 13-inch variant as well as the first Apple Silicon-powered Mac Pro. He expects these Macs to arrive sometime between late spring and sometime in summer. But it isn't clear if these new MacBook Airs will ship with an M3 processor. But he speculates "at least" the 13-inch model could feature the new chip given there's an M2 version of it already.

M2 Mac Pro expected to get delayed

Apple hasn't equipped its Mac Pro line with its latest M2 chip yet. But that might change soon, or soon-ish. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company is delaying the release of an M2-equipped Mac Pro because it is reportedly developing a new next-generation M2 Ultra chip specifically for the high-end desktop. This M2 Mac Pro will supposedly sport up to 24 CPU cores, 76 graphics cores, and 192GB of RAM. It is less powerful than previous rumours, but that might be a cost-cutting measure for what's already considered a premium (a.k.a. very expensive) desktop.

Another reason for the delay is Apple looking to move its manufacturing from Texas to Vietnam. The existing Mac Pro models are finalized in Austin, even though its main internal components are made in China. If this move is true, the internal components will continue to be made in China, while its finishing will be done in Vietnam. That should save time in the long run, but it'll affect the release for now.

Don't expect new Mac releases for the remainder of 2022

Apple might be done releasing new Macs this year. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in his weekly newsletter that Apple is done releasing new Macs for the year. So rumoured updates for the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro are expected in the first quarter of 2023.

"I'm told that Apple is aiming to introduce the upgraded models—including M2-based versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros—in the first quarter of calendar 2023," Gurman wrote. In Apple's latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said its "product lineup is set" ahead of the holidays, suggesting there will no longer be new product launches for the rest of the year.
