Chrome for Android tests scheduled downloads

It looks like Google Chrome for Android is trying out scheduled downloads. The feature shows up in the latest Chrome Canary 86 version, but as 9to5Google notes, it doesn't seem to be fully operational yet. But what it does is let you set a time and date for when a download within the mobile browser should start. And it looks like it would even let you specify when a download begins based on your Wi-Fi connection. When you set a download schedule, Chrome will get a "Scheduled for later" tab where you can manage your downloads. If this feature gets a wider release, it's going to be useful for when you want to save data and battery life but have to download a file.

Chrome on Android to load videos faster while using less battery

A new version of Chrome on Android is promising faster loading times for videos while using up less of your battery. With Chrome 52, you should see videos playing sooner on the mobile browser instead of having it pause briefly before loading as you can see in the demo video above. At the same time, it’ll supposedly make your battery last longer. If you use Data Saver Mode, videos also work there, too. It’ll save you as much as 50 percent on data by what Google says is using a lightweight version of the video. You are supposed to see the differences in short videos, which makes up a lot of online content. But we can’t say how short is short.

Google incorporates data compression feature for Mobile Chrome browser

Google aims to cut your data usage by half when you browse on your mobile devices. The tech company is introducing a data compression feature for both iOS and Android devices in order to help reduce costs for the increasing number of mobile users who browse on their smartphones and tablets. The feature can be activated from the Settings section. Select Bandwidth management and then Reduce data usage. Users can even track the amount of bandwidth saved per month.

“When enabled, Chrome’s data compression and bandwidth management can reduce data usage by up to 50 percent while browsing the web on Chrome for Android and iOS. This feature also enables Chrome’s Safe Browsing technology which helps protect you from malicious webpages,” said Google software engineer Matt Welsh in a blog post.
