Google and Samsung plan to revitalize Wear OS

Ahead of Google I/O 2021, there were rumours that Samsung planned to switch back to Wear OS on its upcoming wearables. Instead, what we got is a collaboration between Samsung and Google to develop Wear OS, bringing the best of Tizen and Google's smartwatch platform together.

Google didn't really show off the new operating system, but from what we've seen so far, there will be navigation changes. Like, you can double-tap a physical button on the watch case to switch between current and previous apps.

Android 12 brings a redesigned experience

Google has shown off the new look of its mobile operating system with the upcoming Android 12 update. It's the first major revamp for the platform in years, with changes to the overall experience, colours, motion, and lights.

Android gets a new Material You design language that integrates the hardware and software further. Starting with Pixel devices, Google introduces Custom Colour Palette, allowing you to personalize your handset's look completely. But if you don't know where to start, Android will pull colours from your wallpaper and apply complementary shades throughout the operating system. You'll see it in the notification shade, the lock screen, the volume controls, new widgets, and more.

Google teases big Wear OS update to be announced at I/O 2021

Fossil

Google hasn't made any upgrades to its Wear OS since 2018. But the company is ready to update the smartwatch platform with announcements at this week's Google I/O Developer Conference. The company sent out a tweet from the official Wear OS Twitter account, teasing updates to be announced this Tuesday. Google has also hinted at featuring an entirely new version of Wear OS on the I/O Adventure page, a "virtual sandbox" for trying out Google products announced at the conference.

There are rumours that Google might have some new hardware to share, with Samsung reportedly dropping Tizen OS to release a Wear OS watch. If that's true, we might hear more about it this Tuesday.

Google I/O will be a virtual event, taking place from May 18 to 20

Here's another big tech event coming back after its 2020 cancellation. Google I/O will be happening next month, from May 18 to 20, but it will be a completely virtual event. Its website is already up, allowing you to sign up for the events. There will be consumer- and developer-focused keynotes, workshops, AMAs, meetups, technical sessions, and more. The full schedule will be released later this month.

Google usually shows off updates to its products as well as new hardware. We expect to hear more about Android 12, but, of course, we can't wait to hear about other surprises.
