After being fired over offensive tweets dug up by far-right provocateur Mike Cernovich, James Gunn finds himself at the helm once again of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as Disney rehires the director. His firing was met with a lot of criticism by reporters, Hollywood insiders, and even the cast of the first two Guardians films to reconsider the firing. Now, Disney has decided to bring him back. According to the company, the decision to rehire Gunn was “mulled and actually made months ago, following conversations with Disney studio leadership and the team at Marvel Studio.” Gunn, who hasn’t tweeted since being fired, sent out a thank you message to fans for their continued support.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was originally slated for a 2020 release, but it’s since been pushed back. There is no news at the moment when it’ll come out. The director is also set to helm Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros., which is coming out next year. He’s one of the few directors now who can say he’s gotten to work on both Marvel and DC projects for two different studios.

James Gunn might be writing the next 'Suicide Squad' film

In what seems like a calculated move after being fired by Marvel Studios, James Gunn might be moving directly to its rival. Warner Bros. just confirmed that they are in talks with the director to write the next Suicide Squad film. It won't exactly be a sequel supposedly with Gunn said to be taking a different approach. What that means we don't know just yet. The film doesn't have a director yet but if he does end up in that position, we're sure it's going to drum up a lot of buzz. The new Suicide Squad will be produced by Peter Safran. There is no target release date just yet.

Production for ‘Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ put on hold after James Gunn firing

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Photofest

Following the firing of James Gunn, Marvel Studios and Disney are on the lookout for a new director for the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. And that’s put the production of the film on hold. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this has pushed the timeline of the film further. Pre-production was supposed to start this fall but now crew members for certain positions reportedly have been let go. And production, which was scheduled to begin this winter, doesn’t look like it’s going to push through.

Gunn was fired in late July after prominent far-right bloggers and personalities dug up offensive and questionable tweets from Gunn’s timeline, some of them around a decade old. Gunn reportedly met with Disney chairman Alan Horn and Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige to talk about his return for the final installment but Horn wouldn’t budge. The cast, in an open letter, have asked the studio to reinstate Gunn. But Disney hasn’t commented on the matter.
