Swivelling LG Wing takes flight, gets officially launched

LG is tapping into its penchant for unusual designs with the launch of the new LG Wing smartphone. As part of its Explorer Project, the Wing is the initial representative of an initiative that aims to breathe new life in smartphone design. It looks like the typical candy bar smartphone design, but LG decided to add a swivelling display into the mix.

Swivelling components used to be a big part of handsets in the early 2000s, but now LG decided to join the dual-screened smartphone segment with this fresh approach. It's definitely not for everyone.

New LG Wing leaked video shows swivelling display in action

We're days away from the launch of the LG Wing, so the rumour mill keeps churning. The latest leak shows how the swivelling screen works, an unusual shape we haven't seen other smartphone makers do. And the phone itself doesn't look that thick. The Wing is expected to be priced around US$1,000, but will the price be worth it even though it's rumoured to forego some flagship specs.

We're curious about the use cases for this handset. But as GSMArena pointed out, we aren't sure how many third-party developers will fully support this experimental dual display solution. We're going to find out more about the LG Wing on Monday, September 14.

LG to unveil dual-screen 'Wing' phone on Sept. 14

We've already seen this new dual-screened smartphone from LG in action in a leaked video. But, now, we're getting an official launch of the "Wing" foldable device on September 14 at 10 am ET. It's technically not the first time LG has dabbled in dual-screened devices. But it's other phones relied on having the second display included through a case. The Wing will be its first foldable that extends out of the screen. When the screen is flipped out, it makes it look like the letter T. You can see in the teaser video above hints of how the screen folds out.

According to LG, it's part of the company's new Explorer Project, which "will ." LG partnered with companies Rave, Ficto, Tubi, and Naver for this project. Qualcomm chips will be powering these devices. Tubi is known for free ad-supported video streaming, while Line messaging app owner, Naver, is supposedly working on a customized dual-screen web browser.
