New 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' trailer teases the possibility of 'Dark Rey'

The new trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker raises an important question. Has Rey joined the Dark Side? Well, this sizzle reel of a trailer seems to suggest just that. But that could also be seen as perhaps a vision or a dream. Lucasfilm unveiled at Disney's D23 Expo over the weekend this new exclusive trailer for the last film of the latest Star Wars trilogy. Aside from showing a lot of footage from the past eight Star Wars films, it teases us with a look at the upcoming movie, including our heroes ending up on a desert locale, a look at the new character Jannah, a C3PO with red eyes, and Rey and Kylo Ren still engaged in an epic fight. We won't find out whether Dark Rey is a thing or not until The Rise of Skywalker hits theatres in December this year.

Here's your first look at 'The Mandalorian'

If you weren't at the Star Wars Celebration, then you wouldn't have seen this trailer. But now, Disney and Lucasfilm just released to the public the first trailer for Jon Favreau's Star Wars series: The Mandalorian. There aren't many words exchanged in the trailer, but we see a lot of fighting spaceships, battling droids, and grittier action than we usually see in a traditional Star Wars film. The feel of the trailer is in line with Favreau's goal to bring a "darker, freakier side of Star Wars" to the public.

Boba Fett and his father, Jango, inspire this series. Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) steps in as the new Mandalorian. The story helps fill in the gap between Return of the Jedi and right after the fall of the Empire and the rise of the First Order. It answers questions of what happened on Tatooine during the time between the trilogies. The Mandalorian is going to be the first Star Wars live-action TV series, and one of the main pulls to get people to subscribe to Disney+.

Lucasfilm takes out Matt Smith from the cast list of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

Doctor Who star Matt Smith might be out of the upcoming Star Wars film, The Rise of Skywalker. Or is he? Well, for now, he has been taken out by Lucasfilm from the cast list on the film’s international website. We’ve seen most of the new cast in a recent feature on Vanity Fair but Smith was nowhere to be found. But since rumours of the actor being involved in the film surfaced about a year ago, he has remained coy about his involvement in the film. Some fans are speculating that his role might involve the return of Emperor Palpatine. It came as a shock when the villain showed up in the first trailer for the film, but director J.J. Abrams confirmed that we will be seeing him in this film. Now, as for Smith, at this point, we’re going to have to wait and see if he does indeed show up.

Carrie Fisher is still part of ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

In case you haven’t heard yet, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Pictures have officially announced the cast for Star Wars: Episode IX and one of the names we were waiting to show up is back. The late Carrie Fisher’s name is still attached to General Leia Organa. They will be using previously unreleased footage. J.J. Abrams said, “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. The new members of the cast include Naomi Ackie (Doctor Who), Richard E. Grant (Gosford Park, Hudson Hawk) and Keri Russell (The Americans). The other veteran Star Wars actors making a return include Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. The film starts filming at London’s Pinewood Studios on August 1 and this final installment of the Skywalker saga is set to come out in December 2019.
