Google Chat gets Material Design 3 makeover

Google Chat's interface gets redesigned to match the looks of Google's other productivity tools. And similar to Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc., the new look is based on the company's Material Design 3 system. The interface gets rounded buttons and a rounded search bar and blue accents all around. Some minor changes to the main message view, a new topic button, compose setup, and thread panel within direct messages and spaces.

Google Chat recently added a new feature that allowed Space Managers to create announcement-only channels, similar to what you can do in Slack.

Gmail for Android and iOS finally get Material Design makeover

After being unveiled at Cloud Next 2018 in July, Material Design theme redesign for Gmail on Android and iOS is finally hitting users. It brings a lot of the features seen in the web version introduced last year. The familiar red app bar and accent has been removed and replaced with a stark white motif. You get a search field with the hamburger button on the left and profile icon on the right. The bottom right corner has the button you can access to compose messages. It’s now easier to see labels and other colours with the new design. Photos, documents, and other attachments are now seen inline for easier access. For “dangerous” messages, you’ll see big red banner warnings. Similar to the web, there are three density views for Gmail: Default, Comfortable, and Compact. The update is rolling out in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for the change to hit your device soon.

Google Material Design theme hits web version of Calendar

It was bound to happen and now it looks like it’s finally here. Google has been slowly introducing its Material Design theme into the web version of its products. The latest app to get a revamp is Google Calendar. The changes are a bit subtle here with new buttons, hollow icons, and font tweaks. It looks cleaner from our perspective and matches the other products more.

Google Maps redesign has begun to roll out

The Material Design makeover for Google Maps isn’t just coming to a few Android users. Google has finally begun rolling out the new look to all Android devices. The tech company first introduced this redesign at Google I/O 2018 back in May. You’ll see a new user interface with new fonts, buttons, and colorful icons in contrast with the mostly white background. The biggest new thing though is the new Explore section which shows you information on what’s available near you. And this shows everything from food, services, shopping, and other areas of interest in your area like gyms, parks, nightlife, etc.

If the update hasn’t made its way to you yet, just be a bit patient. Google usually rolls out updates in stages. Also it’s coming to Android users first and we can’t say yet when iOS Google Maps users will be getting the update but the company does usually port the features it has on Android to iOS so don’t be surprised if the iOS version of Google Maps gets the update, too.
