Reports claim no major announcements from Sony at MWC

While we will still be seeing Sony at this year’s Mobile World Congress, reports claim Sony won’t be showing off its next flagship at the upcoming event. Sony is reportedly changing the way it will deliver flagship devices to cut costs. With the Xperia Z3 just a few months old, it would make sense for them financially to release less devices each year. It is said that Sony will not be holding a formal press conference this year but will have a “welcome greeting” for the media on the first day of the event on March 2. Maybe Sony might introduce something but if they aren’t holding a press con or livestream event for it, then don’t expect it to be their next great flagship.

Samsung tipped to be using own camera module for S6

It looks like Samsung will be parting ways with Sony for its smartphone module, if rumours are to be believed that is. Samsung is reportedly going to use its own module for the 20-megapixel rear camera of its upcoming Galaxy S6 flagship. It will have optical image stabilization as well. We wouldn’t know though if it has the same image quality as the Sony modules, and if the rumour is true. We just have to wait a bit until Mobile World Congress to find out the truth.

Apple's iPad Air wins Best Tablet at Mobile World Congress

Despite not being featured or on display at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Apple's iPad Air took the Best Tablet for 2014 honours as part of the the 2014 Global Mobile Awards. This is despite half-a-dozen new Android tablets having come to market since the iPad Air launched in October.

The iPad Air and the past four generations of Apple's tablet have dominated the tablet space pretty much since Apple introduced the category in 2010. Various waves of tablets have tried to challenge the iPad in the 9.7-inch category. Competitors have diversified by making different sizes, connecting keyboard accessories and even releasing professional versions of their tablets.

Despite this, the iPad and its ecosystem have dominated not just the consumer space but the ever-evolving enterprise market. Apple has managed to make the iPad more portable and yet even more powerful with each suceedding iteration.

Nokia to reportedly debut Android phone at MWC

Nokia is said to be revealing its first Android device at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The Verge quotes a Wall Street Journal report that claims the device codenamed “Normandy” will carry a “forked” version of the operating system from Google, which is similar to what Amazon did with the OS for its Kindle range. Nokia will reportedly integrate Microsoft services into the device and have a special application store for Android apps.

There aren’t too many details on the press event Nokia is holding at MWC in Barcelona except for an invite that says to “meet us under the tree.” We’ll keep you posted on any updates.
