New leak suggests the Motorola Razr will have mid-range specs but premium price tag

Maybe you want to be one of the first to own a reimagined version of the Motorola Razr. Well, you're going to have to pay for it. This rumoured foldable device will reportedly have a hefty US$1,500 price tag. According to "verified information" LetsGoDigital got from an anonymous source, the redesigned Motorola Razr is coming soon. And it could come to the U.S. in just a "few months." The phone modernizes the clamshell design with this rumoured foldable display hidden inside. The dimensions of the phone aren't known yet, but recent renders did show that we can expect a small second screen on the outside for notifications.

According to the report, the premium price tag doesn't seem to match the specs of the phone. It will reportedly not come with a high-end processor, and it'll supposedly have a "smaller battery" than other foldable phones. It seems Motorola wants to bank on the nostalgia of the form factor. But we aren't sure if that would make people want to shell out that much money. The report suggests that there will be a European launch after the U.S. debut that could take place between December 2019 and January 2020. If there's any truth to this report, then we might be seeing the phone this fall.

Motorola teases folding Razr phone using concept video

Lenovo’s Motorola hasn’t been shy about the fact that it’s working on its take on the foldable phone using its iconic Razr line. During a recent official media event, the company showed off the new “V4 Motorola Razr” in its folded and unfolded form. Motorola used a concept video by Waqar Khan, which closely resembles the sketches for the patent it received earlier this year. The video shows three colour options for the phone: black, red, and blue. It shows the internal folding screen and a smaller one in front. It gives us a peek at the hinge’s design as well.

We can’t really glean much from the short clip, but with the company actively talking about it, perhaps we’re getting the phone sooner than we think. Motorola’s VP Dan Dery said the company wanted to launch its foldable device “no later” than its rivals. With Samsung’s version pushed back and the Huawei Mate X set for a mid-2019 launch, we might be getting the same timeline as one of these devices.

Leaked press render shows off what the foldable Motorola RAZR might look like

We know that Motorola is working on a foldable device, but outside of patents, we haven’t seen what they look like. Until today. Leaked renders of the rumoured phone surfaced on a now-deleted Weibo post and was later reuploaded to SlashLeaks. It shows a vertically folding screen, which mimics what the Motorola RAZR was in the past. The leak also shows a wireless charging station and range of accessories that come with the triangular box. This rumoured “RAZR 4” hasn’t been officially confirmed but the render does match up with the patent that was filed late last year for a vertical folding phone sporting the RAZR’s recognizable look.

Rumour has it the phone was going to get a US$1,500 price tag with a launch coming as early as February. But that hasn’t happened. Motorola did say they were updating the RAZR design but gave no indication when we would see the new version. So for now, take these renders with a grain of salt.

Motorola Razr might be coming back as an expensive folding smartphone

And by expensive, we mean you might be shelling out US$1,500 for it. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Motorola’s parent company Lenovo is looking to cash in on your nostalgia and might be working on an updated version of the classic Motorola Razr brand. But instead of it being a regular flip phone, it might turn into a foldable phone. Nothing else is known about what the phone could look like, but rumour has it Lenovo is partnering with Verizon in the US and is set for a February launch.

As The Verge points out, there seems to be a resurgence of these old smartphone designs. Kind of like how we keep remaking classic films and TV shows. It might be a good niche product, but we’re not sure if a flagship device is the way to go. Lenovo reportedly plans to make over 200,000 new Razr phones, which is admittedly ambitious for this expensive device. But if people with deep pockets want to indulge in nostalgia for a bit and it turns out to be a cool device, we won’t be surprised if these sell.
