Rogers and CIBC to launch Canadian mobile payment solution today

CIBC and Rogers Communications are gearing up to launch Canada's first joint mobile payment solution, allowing Canadians to pay with their CIBC credit card at the checkout counter using their Rogers "Near Field Communications" (NFC) enabled smartphone. Customers will be able to use this payment capability at merchants across Canada where contactless credit card payments are accepted. The service launches today with Olympian Simon Whitfield.

The Apple Beat: Why Passbook may be a better short-term option than NFC

A number of pundits grumbled that Apple missed out on an opportunity by not including Near Field Communications (NFC) in the iPhone 5 as a mobile wallet solution. But Apple's Passbook App, coming on September 19th via the free iOS 6 update, is likely a better option at least for the short term.

Sony launches Xperia Ion smartphone and accessories

Sony has just launched its first 4G LTE smartphone, the Xperia Ion which is coming to Rogers for  $49.99 on a three-year contract, $449.99 for two years and $499.99 for a one-year plan. The first pure Sony device developed sans Ericsson, the Xperia Ion boasts a Bravia 4.6" HD display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon  processor, 1GB of RAM. The Ion ties into a system of accessories including a Smart Watch, a wireless headset and NFC smart cards.
