OnePlus 5 gets Face Unlock feature through Open Beta 3

We reported earlier today how Android Oreo started rolling out to the OnePlus 5T through the company’s beta program. This time around the 5T’s younger sibling is getting a sizable update of its own through the beta program as well. A 1.6GB Open Beta build update for the OnePlus 5 brings with it some changes and one of the biggest ones is the release of the Face Unlock for the device. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei announced in late December that the OnePlus 5 was getting the feature.

On top of this the update comes with fix for 5G Wi-Fi-related connection issue, optimizations for vibration, an app shortcut on Launcher, and security fixes for December.

OnePlus launches app to help migrate data to a new device

While Google has baked in its own device backup/restore tool into Google Play Services, OnePlus is offering its own migration tool with the new OnePlus Switch app. The app can help you migrate contacts, SMS messages, call logs, calendars, photos, videos, audio, and apps (but no app data). It can work on any Android device that runs Lollipop 5.0 and higher. The app is currently in beta, but OnePlus says a stable version is expected to arrive mid-January.

OnePlus explores idea of bringing Face Unlock to 3/3T

We got news on Christmas that OnePlus was bringing its Face Unlock technology to the OnePlus 5. And we got more details about how that is going to come about. Carl Pei shared a post on the OnePlus forums sharing about how the OnePlus 5 will initially be part of the OxygenOS Open Beta as “an early test run” of sorts to work out any bugs. This will later on be pushed as part of the public OTA update.

Pei adds to this post asking the users of the OnePlus 3 and 3T if they want Face Unlock, too. Users are responding in kind as Android Central points out that one thread already has over 50 pages with people talking about Face Unlock on the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

First 37 customers of the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition will get a star named after them

OnePlus has one more gimmick for those who buy the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition in India. The first 37 buyers will get a personalized “Star Wars” constellation named after them and will be given a certificate of ownership with the details about their own star. Whether you retain ownership of this star though is highly unlikely. As GSMArena points out, many of the stars that have been named could possibly not be recognized by the International Astronomical Union and the star you think is named after you might be registered to someone else. But at least you have a certificate out of it? And you also get a cool new phone with an Easter egg included in the packaging.
