Warner Bros. is happy enough with the response to Wonder Woman 1984 that it is fast-tracking the third and final Wonder Woman film. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, and Patty Jenkins will write and direct the movie again.

“As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able [to] continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women—Gal and Patty—who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement.

Patty Jenkins teases her plans for ‘Wonder Woman 3’

While we’re still waiting for the release of Wonder Woman 1984. Director Patty Jenkins already knows how she wants to end her arc for the Amazonian princess. During an interview with Vanity Fair for her upcoming noir limited series I Am The Night, which stars Wonder Woman lead Chris Pine, Jenkins affirmed she has begun thinking about what the third film should be about. She said, “I have pretty clear plans for Wonder Woman 3. Whether I [direct] it or not, I see how her arc should end in my incarnation of Wonder Woman. I have great passion for that.”

No plans are set in stone in the DC Extended Universe, but we admittedly would be surprised if Wonder Woman doesn’t get a third solo outing. Her first film earned the highest reviews for the DCEU and grossed over US$820 million globally. Given the hype surrounding the sequel, it seems inevitable a third outing is going to happen. For now, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to open in theatres in June 5, 2020.

‘Wonder Woman’ is now the top-grossing superhero origin movie

Clay Enos

Since the movie came out in June, Wonder Woman has been smashing records left and right. This time, it becomes the highest grossing superhero origin movie ever made. Director Patty Jenkins’ smash hit just earned US$821,750,942 worldwide. It overthrows 2002 Spider-Man film, which earned $821,708,551. According to BoxOfficeMojo, the three other best-selling origin films are Deadpool at $783,112,979, Guardians of the Galaxy at $773,328,629, and Suicide Squad at $745,600,054. These, however, have not been adjusted for inflation, as Business Insider points out, which means Spider-Man earned over a billion if that’s factored in.

But it still doesn’t detract from the success and popularity of Wonder Woman. It’s still the highest-grossing DC Extended Universe movie, highest-grossing live action film by a female director, one of the top five highest-grossing superhero movies of all time, and most tweeted movie of 2017. We’ll be seeing Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman next in the upcoming Justice League film.

Patty Jenkins officially signs on as ‘Wonder Woman 2’ director

Warner Bros.

Wonder Woman’s sequel is getting its director back. Patty Jenkins has just signed on to the second film of the highly successful superhero film Wonder Woman. We’ve known for a while that Gal Gadot has coming back as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. But Jenkins was initially brought on to direct the first film only. It’s been reported that she was negotiating with Warner Bros. over her pay. Jenkins’ reportedly expects she be paid more than the first time around. She has leverage in this regard after Wonder Woman became the highest-grossing, live-action film directed by a woman. And it looks like she got what she wanted.

The exact number wasn’t unveiled but Variety’s sources say the number should be around the US$8 million dollar range to direct, write, and produce the film, making her the highest paid female director of all time. A substantial backend of box office grosses is also part of her contract. Jenkins is reportedly working on the sequel’s script with DC Comics President Geoff Johns. The sequel is set to premiere on December 13, 2019.
