Google Pixel sales have plummeted, while key executives exit the team


Google's line of Pixel smartphones were once promising flagship competitors to Samsung Galaxies and Notes as well as Apple iPhones, but now it seems that interest and sales of these devices is cratering. Recent reports state that Google has sold only 2 million Pixel devices in the first two quarters of the year. There have also been defections within Google's Pixel team as two key executives, camera expert Marc Levoy and general manager Mario Queiroz have departed the team signaling some unrest within the smartphone division.

Google purchases HTC's Pixel team for US $1.1 billion

After weeks of speculation that Google would purchase HTC's smartphone business, we finally learn that the search giant has bought the Pixel team from HTC for $1.1 billion, while HTC will continue its own smartphone business. 

The team in question was the R&D team behind last year's Pixel and Pixel XL. This means around 2,000 people will move to Google. According to the agreement this grants Google a non-exclusive license for HTC's intellectual property. The deal is expected to be approved and closed by early 2018.

Google is releasing a new Pixel phone this year, will still be a premium device

Google will release new Pixel and Pixel XL devices in 2017. While the original models were rushed to market (reportedly because Huawei dropped out of the project and HTC stepped at the last minute), the upcoming versions are expected to bring more Pure Android goodness plus add some user requested features like water resistance and possibly wireless charging.

Elusive 'Really Blue' Google Pixel coming to Canada through Rogers

Google's Pixel has currently available sporadically in Quite Black and Very Silver, Google announced that it is finally bringing the Really Blue Pixel north of the border at Rogers locations. Formerly sold as an exclusive to American carriers, the Really Blue Pixel will be available in two sizes as well as two capacities (32GB and 128), Google does bundle unlimited storage space for full resolution videos and photos.
