Apple to offer free coding workshops in Retail Stores

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering: “Coding is just like any language, the earlier you’re exposed the more successful you’ll be."

Apple today opened registration for Hour of Code workshops at all 487 Apple retail stores worldwide, from December 5 through 11 in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. Among the most popular events at the Apple Store, Hour of Code workshops teach the basics of computer science with Code.org’s programming tutorials. Apple and Code.org share the goal of giving every student the opportunity to learn computer science.

“Hour of Code embodies our vision for Apple stores as a place for the community to gather, learn and be entertained,” said Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail. “We’re proud to introduce the Swift Playgrounds app into the workshops and honoured to again work side-by-side with Code.org on this incredibly important initiative. Hour of Code is one of the absolute highlights of the year for both our teams and the families that visit our stores.”

Apple's new flagship San Francisco Retail Store gets approved

The revamped Union Station Apple Retail Store, which is said to be as striking and iconic as New York's 5th Avenue Glass Cube, should see the light of day after it was 'approved with conditions'.

This means Apple needs to comply with certain regulations but will likely be able to build the impressive storefront it desires for what is really its hometown Apple Store. The Union Station locations is a stone's throw away from both the Moscone North (where WWDC is held) and the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts (location of many an epic Apple product unveilings). This new flagship store will feature a cantilevered building structure with an all-glass front holding two giant two-story sliding glass doors. Other improvements, according to Appleinsider, include a waterfall and free Wi-Fi in the rear plaza.

Apple's made good on its previous promises to create a store without disrupting the original flavour of the buildings it occupies. Just check out its Grand Central Station store in New York as well as various locations in Europe which seamlessly integrate the store concept with existing architecture.
