Samsung tipped to be working on a tri-fold smartphone

Huawei has already launched the tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate. Will Samsung follow suit? (Photo: Huawei)

Samsung might be looking to shake up its foldable business. The company is supposedly thinking about launching a tri-fold smartphone in 2025. Industry insiders from Korea said the company is ready for the technology, and its supply chain can handle the new product. However, the final call for its production will come from Samsung's MX (Mobile eXperience) Division, the unit responsible for its foldable phones. The company might be exploring this new design to combat slower sales.

According to the report, there's been a 10% decrease in the order of OLED panels as demands for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 didn't meet expectations. Samsung Displays shipments for foldable OLED panels will total roughly 12 million this year, a stark 40% decrease from last year's 20 million shipments. The Fold6 and Flip6 are responsible for around eight million units, down from the 10 million forecasted sales.

Samsung Display's Flex Hybrid OLED slides and folds into a bigger screen

Samsung Display's newest prototype display shows off more than a folded screen. The Flex Hybrid OLED integrates a sliding component this time. The screen starts at a compact 4.2-inch wide screen that you can fold out into a 10.5-inch 4:3 display. If you need something bigger, it can slide out on the right side to get a 12.4-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

Intel, Samsung Display show off 'slidable' PC concept

Source: Intel

If this concept ever comes to life, we might see slidable PCs in the future. Samsung Display CEO JS Choi showed off at Intel's Innovation keynote a new prototype PC that goes from a 13-inch tablet into a 17-inch one. Choi said this "device will satisfy various needs for a larger screen and portability as well." He hinted at foldable being gone on PCs for now, at least from Samsung Display's perspective.

Using this prototype, Intel demonstrated its new Unison software on this screen, which aims to connect Intel-powered computers to smartphones. We don't know if this concept will ever become an actual product, but it does show us what the companies are experimenting with in this space.

Samsung rumoured to stop traditional LCD panel production

Source: Samsung

This might not be the most unexpected rumour, but the timing might be earlier than expected. Samsung is reportedly planning to stop producing its LCD panels as soon as next month. The Korea Times bases its report on industry insiders, which claim the demand for LCD panels has begun declining and projections for its revenue don't look too good. The Samsung Display business unit had received a stay of execution when the pandemic started a global surge in demand for consumer electronics, but the end seems to be within sight already.
