The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be relaunched in September

After delaying the phone for 89 days, Samsung is finally ready to announce a new release window for the Galaxy Fold. It’ll be coming out in September. The company hasn’t given a specific date yet. And as initially planned, it’ll only be available in select countries. Samsung will be releasing specific sale dates as the month approaches.

The company took the time to fix issues with the Galaxy Fold to avoid the troubles it encountered. These include extending the protective top layer beyond the bezel, adding “reinforcements to stop debris from getting under the screen, and new “protection caps” to strengthen the top and bottom parts of the hinge. There are natural gaps there where particles could get in. Samsung also added metal reinforcements beneath the screen, presumably to make the plastic screen stiffer. There’s also less of an air gap between the Fold’s body and its hinge.

Samsung reportedly fixes issues with the Galaxy Fold’s screen

The wait for Samsung’s Galaxy Fold might soon be over. According to a report from Bloomberg, the company has supposedly fixed the issues plaguing the company’s first foldable device. According to people familiar with the matter, the phone is now in the final stages of producing the commercial version. The company has wrapped the protective film around the entire display and into the outer bezels of the device, which should prevent people from peeling the film off and rendering the device useless. Some reviewers of the Galaxy Fold learned the hard way that the film wasn’t supposed to be peeled off. Samsung has reportedly pushed the hinge slightly upward to have it flushed against the display. This should stretch the film further when the display is opened.

We’re not sure if Samsung addressed the other issues that journalists ran into with the Galaxy Fold. But we’re assuming that it has. This means it’ll be ready ahead of the holiday season. However, it seems the device won’t be ready by the August 7th event for the Galaxy Note 10.

The S Pen might be coming to the next-gen Galaxy Fold

We’re not exactly counting on this rumour to be true, but the Korean media is buzzing with claims about Samsung’s next Galaxy Fold. Yes, the next one, even if the first one hasn’t even left Samsung’s gates. But we want to indulge the idea a bit and think about what Samsung might bring to the next-gen Galaxy Fold. Rumour has it the Galaxy Fold 2 will get a screen size upgrade, going from 7.3 inches to 8 inches, placing it in Samsung’s tablet territory (close to its own Galaxy Tab A, in fact).

On top of that, Samsung is reportedly toying with the idea of adding support for the S Pen stylus. As SlashGear points out, this raises an important question. For the Galaxy Fold to support the S Pen, it’ll need a Wacom digitizer, which doesn’t exist for foldable surfaces just yet. There have been Chinese digitizers that have been used on flexible drawing tablets, but we don’t think Samsung might head down that route. Or could they? Is there even a point to working on a second-generation one when the first-gen hasn’t even made its way to the public yet?

Samsung reportedly denies July release of the Galaxy Fold

Rumours were going around that Samsung set a July release date for the delayed Galaxy Fold. The foldable device was originally supposed to launch on April 26th, but after reviewers encountered troubles with test units, Samsung opted to delay the launch of the device to fix the issues. Earlier this month, there were rumours that the company was going to launch the device in July. According to The Korea Herald though, this seems to be false. A Samsung official reportedly told them, “If we are running such a media event this month, we should be doing something by now. Nothing has progressed since the April delay.”

As The Verge points out, this could mean Samsung might just wait for the launch of the Galaxy Note 10 to introduce the Galaxy Fold (assuming that this won’t cannibalize each other’s sales). Back in May, Samsung co-CEO DJ Koh promised that the release of the Galaxy Fold “will not be too late.” But it seems we aren’t going to get a definite release date anytime soon. And Samsung isn’t the only one delaying its launch, Huawei has also pushed back the release of the Mate X from this month to September for more testing.
