There’s a ‘Game of Thrones’ edition of the Samsung Galaxy Fold

In case you didn’t think the Samsung Galaxy Fold couldn’t get more expensive, Caviar decides to give the phone a pop culture makeover. They’re creating a version of the phone that’s inspired by the recently concluded show Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin’s next book, The Winds of WinterThe foldable phone is customized to look like a book. It's stylized in front “into a cover of the long-awaited book." The front and rear panels feature exquisite bas-relief that’s covered in gold and shaped to represent different major houses of Westeros. There’s even an etched map of the said world at the back. When folded, it can be locked with a gold clasp.

The inside and its specs remain similar to Samsung’s original model. This means you still get the Galaxy Fold with a Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB internal storage. It has a quad camera setup at the back and dual front cameras. The battery is still at 4,380mAh. With no official word yet when Samsung plans to relaunch the Galaxy Fold, Caviar can’t announce when it’s version will be available. But the luxury brand said it’ll have a simultaneous launch date with Samsung. How much will this set you back? A very cool US$8,200. On the plus side, Caviar is offering free worldwide shipping for the units, which are very limited in number. There will only be seven units of this phone.

Report details how Samsung is fixing the Galaxy Fold’s issues

After running into a bunch of display issues with the Galaxy Fold, Samsung postponed the release of its first foldable phone. A new report from Korea’s Yonhap News Agency talks about how the company is fixing the issues reviewers had with their units. The phone was originally supposed to come out on April 26th, but with reviewers running into problems that caused the screen to break easily, Samsung opted to delay the launch of the phone.

One of the fixes it’s employing is tucking the protective film under the frame of the device so it’ll be harder for its user to remove. The amount of hinge that is exposed has also reportedly been minimized to prevent foreign objects from getting under the screen and destroying it. Samsung told Yonhap News Agency that it’s testing the redesigned model with three wireless carriers in Korea. According to CNBC, we expect a new release date announcement in the “coming weeks.” Samsung said it’ll automatically cancel the pre-orders of customers who don’t confirm interest in the device if the company can’t ship it by May 31st.

So, it’s happened. Samsung will not be launching the Galaxy Fold on April 26 in the US. The company announced on Monday that it’ll be delaying the sale date to a later one, which they will announce “in the coming weeks.” According to Samsung’s statement, “Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance. To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold.”

One might not be related to the other but recent events suggest otherwise. Confused? Well, Samsung is reportedly postponing its Chinese launch of the upcoming Galaxy Fold smartphone. According to SamMobile, the postponement was reportedly due to an issue with the venue, but said other activities related to the launch have also been delayed or canceled. According to Engadget’s Chinese Editor-in-Chief Richard Lai, planned events for the Galaxy Fold in Hong Kong and Shanghai happening on Tuesday and Wednesday have been postponed as well.

The rumoured postponements come after reports that some review units encountered a variety of issues just a few days after the tech journalists got their hands on them. Samsung already issued a statement on these problems and seemed to have plans to push through with the US launch on April 26th. Now, we’re keeping watch to see if the company sticks to that plan.
