‘Sense8’ finale gets June 8 release date

After sci-fi series Sense8 got cancelled last year despite high cost of production, it left fans wanting with how the show ended. Netflix decided to heed fan requests and the show from J. Michael Straczynski and the achowskis will be coming back for a two-hour finale on June 8. The streaming service describes it as, “Personal lives are pushed aside as the cluster, their sidekicks, and some unexpected allies band together for a rescue mission and BPO take-down in order to protect the future of all Sensates."

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos defends decision to cancel ‘The Get Down’ and Sense8’

For fans of the shows The Get Down and Sense8, the recent news that Netflix canceled them is a devastating blow. And even with clamor from fans to get the shows renewed, it looks like the streaming service isn’t changing its mind. According to the company’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, they had to cancel the shows because the cost of production wasn’t being justified by its viewership. According to The Wrap’s story on Sarandos’ statement, the chief content officer said, “We couldn’t support those economics. If you put all your money into something that a very few people are watching, eventually you’ll have nothing for people to watch. … But relative to what it cost to make [The Get Down], we couldn’t put together enough audience to support those economics. … Similarly, the audience [for Sense8] was very passionate but just not large enough to support the economics of something that big, even in our platform.”

Netflix isn’t one to release its viewership data but it’s the first time Netflix has announced such high-profile cancellations. And this isn’t the end. CEO Reed Hasting said recently, we could expect a higher cancel rate for the service’s original series in the future—which ones this will be we don’t know yet.

Netflix’s ‘Sense8’ cancelled after two seasons

Following the cancellation of The Get Down, Sense8 joins a number of Netflix shows that are getting cancelled. The sci-fi drama explores the connection between eight strangers from around the globe. It has assembled a diverse set of actors like Aml Ameen, Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemel, Miguel Angel Silvestre, and Brian J. Smith. Rumours were already swirling a few days ago and cast member Smith even helped get #RenewSense8 hashtag trending on Twitter. But unfortunately, it now joins Bloodline, Hemlock Grove, Lilyhammer, and Marco Polo, among the canceled Netflix series.

The cancellation announcement comes days after Netflix CEO and founder Reed Hastings told CNBC at the Code Conference in California that their platform hasn’t canceled enough shows. “Our hit ratio is way too high right now. I’m always pushing the content team; we have to take more risk, you have to try more crazy things, because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”

Netflix announces Christmas special and season premiere for ‘Sense8’

For fans of the Netflix sci-fi drama Sense8, the latest news is sure to be a great Christmas gift. The show will be streaming a special on December 23 and will come back for a second season on May 5, 2017. It might seem like such a long wait since the 12-episode season was released back in June 2015. But perhaps the Christmas special could tide some of you over until the new season airs.

Sense8 is an Emmy-nominated show from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski and The Matrix creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski. Lilly Wachowski will supposedly be stepping back from the series, though. The story focuses on eight strangers from around the world that they are “sensates” or humans who are mentally and emotionally linked.
