‘Super Mario Run’ gets first update on Android

Nintendo just updated the Android version of Super Mario Run to bring a bunch of new features to the game. Version 2.1.0 introduces Google Play achievements, an increase to the maximum number of Toads that can live in your kingdom (it now stands at 99,999), and the ability to find friends from your Nintendo account. Aside from that, Nintendo now lets you show off your customized Mii character from Miitomo for your player icon. The game also gets “other changes and improvements” according to its changelog.

‘Super Mario Run’ is out on Android

Nintendo seems to have gotten a bit excited and released its first Mario game for smartphones ahead of schedule. Super Mario Run is being reported by The Verge to be out on Android already. Just like with the iOS version, the game itself is free to download and includes trial versions of the World Tour, Toad Rally, and Kingdom Builder modes. Courses 1-1 to 1-4 are also included in the free trial. If you want full access to the game, you need to make a one-time payment of US$9.99. There won’t be any in-app purchases after that time. It isn't showing up for us yet but keep an eye out for it, it should be coming your way soon.

The end of the iOS exclusivity for Super Mario Run has come. Android users will finally get to try out Nintendo’s latest mobile Mario game for themselves. The releases comes in time for the version 2.0 of the game and brings with it more character options and give free players a chance to tackle World 1-4 if they complete a certain challenge. There are still other new things for version 2.0 but Nintendo isn’t saying much. So time to mark those calendars off, Android users. Your time has come.

Nintendo makes US$53 million from 'Super Mario Run'

Reuters/Kim Kyung-Hoon

For a game that asks users to pay US$10 to get most of its levels, Super Mario Run has done quite well for its first two months out on the market. It hasn't even launched on the Android platform yet. Out of the 78 million total downloads, more than five percent paid to unlock all the levels. Games consultant Serkan Toto told the Wall Street Journal that this was an "amazing" feat for a game with a high in-app purchase rate. Most of Nintendo's rivals couldn't hit that even with just $1 or $2 in-app purchase rate.

But Nintendo is disappointed with the result. The gaming company was hoping to hit a double-digit conversion rate with this game, considering it is such a recognizable brand. But with just a couple of titles out of the gate, Nintendo shouldn't write off the mobile gaming market jut yet. Super Mario Run will be coming to Android in March and there are big name franchises like Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem coming to the mobile space soon. Better fortune might be heading their way.
