Report: Video game arcades are making a comeback in Toronto

Video game arcades were the preferred hangouts of gamers in the 70's and 80's but were slowly killed off by home gaming consoles as well as the advent of networked gaming and the Internet. A new report finds that gaming arcades are making a comeback in Toronto.

"Toronto is experiencing a full-blown arcade and pinball machine renaissance, fueled by communities of players who share a love for the coin-op experience. Though a trickle of new machines continue to emerge on the scene, retro arcade and pinball machines make up the bulk of today’s “barcades” — the slang term for establishments that serve alcohol alongside retro-gaming goodness," states a report from Zolo.ca.

To celebrate the arcade revival, Zolo News has created 416cade, a map of all public-facing arcade and pinball machines across Greater Toronto. To find out where these pinball and games are at check out their maps here.

Car2Go, which has 80,000 customers in Toronto, announced it is shutting down operations in the downtown core due to what it calls prohibitive parking permit fees. The familiar blue and white SmartCar vehicles will soon disappear from 350 parking spaces in Toronto.
