Microsoft holding Windows 10 hardware event in NY on October 6

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

Following up a rather low-key Windows 10 launch last July, Microsoft is gearing up for a Windows 10-related hardware launch extravaganza on at 10 a.m. on October 6 at the Skylight at Moynihan Station in NYC.

While the new Lumia 950/ 950 XL handsets have been leaked and are expected to feature heavily in this event, Microsoft is also expected to unveil a new Surface Pro 4 tablet (running Intel Skylake processors), Microsoft Band 2, and more information on Windows 10 as it relates to Xbox One.

Various Windows 10 devices from Microsoft's partner OEMs were released durinf IFA a few weeks ago, so Microsoft likely has other surprises under its sleeve for what many expect to be a pretty significant launch event. Windows 10 achieved 75 million installs as of August.

Intel's new Skylake processors bundle performance improvements with better battery life

Intel recently announced it's 6th generation of Intel Core processors codenamed Skylake. This processor family is expected to set a new standard with new, portable sleek designs that are thinner than ever, are capable of starting in about half a second, and offer up to two and a half times the performance and triple the battery life when compared to the computers many people currently own. The new architecture is designed for Windows 10 but will also likely be used in new MacBook products from Apple.

Inte says the 6th Gen Intel Core processor family is the most scalable ever for consumers and businesses, enabling the broadest range of designs from the smallest Intel Compute Stick and All-in-One desktops, to 2 in 1s, notebooks and the first-ever Intel Xeon processor for mobile workstations.

Is this Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 flagship smartphone?

With all this talk about Windows 10 being able to run on 'all devices' as well as the Continuum feature which can turn a powerful smartphone into a desktop PC (given a dock, keyboard, monitor and mouse), there hasn't really been any hardware coming out of Microsoft that could demonstrate this ability. Until now.

The leaked photo above seems to belong to a 5.2-inch prototype Windows Phone which is said to be sporting a USB Type-C connector. It is hinted that this has a 20 megapixel PureView camera as well as a Snapdragon 808 processor and 3GB of RAM. Hopefully this device will be launched in time to ride the wave of interest that Windows 10 is enjoying right now.
