YouTube going hyper immersive with 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio

After years of livestreaming Coachella for fans around the world who can’t attend the festival, this year we’re bringing you the festival like never before by live streaming select artist performances in 360-degrees this weekend

YouTube is offering viewers 360 degree live viewing on certain videos now complete with spatial audio.

"We first launched support for 360-degree videos back in March 2015. From musicians to athletes to brands, creators have done some incredible things with this technology. Now, they’ll be able to do even more to bring fans directly into their world, with 360-degree live streaming. And after years of livestreaming Coachella for fans around the world who can’t attend the festival, this year we’re bringing you the festival like never before by live streaming select artist performances in 360-degrees this weekend," YouTube explained in its blog.

YouTube reportedly developing live streaming app

If reports are to be believed, YouTube wants to get in on the live streaming game. The company is supposedly branching out to have a new live streaming one called YouTube Connect. YouTube won't comment on this but it is said the new app will have a similar format to Periscope, meaning you can log into the app with your Google or YouTube account and immediately start streaming from your phone. It'll also supposedly have a chat and tagging feature and a news feed that shows your friends's streams as well as the accounts you subscribe to on YouTube. The speculation arises after many have tried to get into the live streaming space to attract younger users and capitilize on the rise of the live format.

YouTube for iOS gets Slide Over and Split View support

YouTube app gets a significant update on iOS for iPad users. The video streaming app gets Slide Over and Split View support. As a refresher, SlideOver lets you check an app briefly by sliding it onto the screen, while Split View lets you run two apps side-by-side. Of course the usual caveats apply with Slide Over works with Apple tablets that extend as far back as the original iPad Air and iPad mini 2. Meanwhile, Split View works with the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, and both iPad Pro models. Unfortunately, Google didn’t implement iOS 9’s Picture in Picture feature so you won’t be able to watch YouTube videos while using another app or while you’re on the iPad home screen.

Top playlists on the YouTube Kids App for Family Day

By Sonya Davidson

As we head into the Family Day long weekend here in Ontario and other Canadian provinces (and bracing for bitterly cold weather), families are all now looking for things to do with their kids. Where do we often do our research? It's no surprise that we often reach for our devices and Google "things to do" whether it's adventures outdoors, indoor activities or what's open during the long weekend.

Families with kids, like us, often find we need some downtime in between outings...okay truthfully, I really don't want to go outside and there are so many cake pops we need to make!
