Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga futuristic exhibition opens with no distractions.

By Sonya Davidson

How curious are we? An invitation to a special exhibition piques our collective interest for the forward thinking fashion collaboration between Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga of ANREALAGE and Trident gum. Wait. What?

The conceptual fashion line asks us to focus more and minimize distractions in our daily life. Each piece in the collection is made of radio frequency shielding fabric protecting us from the virtual world.

There are times that we shouldn’t be using our mobile devices – think restaurants, driving, air travel or at the movies. The notion is that you would have your device in your pocket and within reach – but signals are blocked. Nothing is transmitted but you also wouldn’t need to shut it down completely. The garments include pockets made with this fabric that allow us to carry our mobile devices without them being a distraction, allowing us to embrace a lifestyle of focus.

But what’s the relationship with Trident gum? Apparently chewing gum helps us stay focused. Hmmm. I’m often chewing gum while I work to prevent me from wondering what to have for lunch or grabbing for chips and jellybeans. So, perhaps there is some truth to this.

“We stand for a distraction free lifestyle, so we were extremely excited to work with this  fashion house to bring this concept to the real world,” says Caroline Hugall, Diretor of Marketing for Trident.  “Aurealage is an extremely progressive fashion house that thinks about the future and technology. They count Lady GaGa amongst their fans. In fact, she’s worn several of their designs in the past. They are really futuristic and surreal.”

Designer Kunihiko Morinaga launched the brand ANREALAGE in 2003 – the name is a combination of the words “A Real, Unreal and Age”. The designer creates with the idea that “God is in the details.”

In addition, you may want to check out just how much of a “social media addict” you really are. I’m ranking number one with my list of friends and in 17th place globally. Not sure if that’s a good thing! Let me know what your standings are.

The Focus Life Gear by Trident Exhibition is now open to the public until April 6th at 536 Queen Street West, Toronto.
