One of the best ways to learn a new language is to immerse yourself in it. And no, that doesn't mean you have to travel there immediately (of course, that would be nice). Sometimes you can learn more by watching shows and movies in the language you're studying. And that's where this Chrome extension comes in. Language Learning with Netflix lets you watch shows with two subtitles on, allowing you to pair the translations with dialogue to help you pick up new words and the like. It supports the major languages on the service that already offer subtitles (including Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish).
This free-to-use extension works best as a supplement for those who already have a basic understanding of the language they're studying. There is a vocabulary-highlighting feature that would gray out less common words. It's adjustable so it can be matched to your vocabulary level. If you hover over a word, a pop-up dictionary shows up. If you click on it, you'll hear it being pronounced. The extension will also let you slow down dialogue or automatically pause playback at the end of every subtitle. You even get a catalog of recommendations for shows or movies that are great to use as study tools.
As mentioned, the extension is free to use. But its developers David Wilkinson and Ognjen Apic are planning to add more features for paid users. One of the features they are considering is additional subtitles for dubbed dialogue.
Wilkinson said, "Netflix has alternative audio tracks for many well-known series, but the subtitles in other languages don’t match the audio. We’re considering creating new subtitles for these alternative audio tracks, so you could study German, for example, with Breaking Bad with matching German audio and subtitles."
